Montjuïc Castle, an old military fortress built in 1640, rises above Montjuïc Hill, offering panoramic views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean.Originally conceived as a defensive fort during the Catalan Revolt, it was transformed into an imposing star-shaped fort in the 18th century.
Throughout its history, the Castell de Montjuïc has played various roles, from military bastion to political prison and, sadly, place of executions, especially during the Spanish Civil War.In 1940, Lluís Companys, president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, was executed here.
In 2007, the castle became the property of the Barcelona City Council, symbolising its transformation into a public monument and a cultural space open to all citizens.Today, it hosts exhibitions on Barcelona's history, civil rights, and Catalan identity.
Visitors can explore the surrounding gardens, walk the ramparts, and enjoy 360-degree views of the city. Access to Montjuïc Castle is possible via the Montjuïc Cable Car, which offers a scenic route with stunning views. It can also be reached by bus or on foot. The castle is a symbol of Barcelona's history, representing both the city's repression and struggles over time.
