The Cathedral of Barcelona, formally known as the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Holy Eulalia, is a magnificent example of Catalan Gothic architecture and the seat of the Archbishopric of Barcelona. Its construction lasted from the 13th century to the 15th century, although the neo-Gothic façade was completed at the end of the 19th century. The cathedral stands on the remains of ancient churches, including an early Christian basilica from the 4th century and a Romanesque church consecrated in 1058.
The architectural design features three naves, a choir and a cloister, characteristic of Catalan Gothic, which prioritises spaciousness and balance over elevated structures.Inside, the ribbed vaults stand out, the side chapels decorated with sculptures and paintings, and the stained glass windows that filter a soft light, creating a serene atmosphere. The 14th-century cloister houses a garden with palm trees, an orange tree, a fountain and thirteen white geese, symbolising the age of Saint Eulalia at the time of her martyrdom.
Today, Barcelona Cathedral remains an important place of worship and a point of first-rate tourist interest.
