"The world is born in every kiss" is a photomosaic that is located in the Plaça d'Isidre Nonell, in the heart of Barcelona. Created in 2014 by photographer Joan Fontcuberta and ceramicist Antoni Cumella, this mural has become a must-see and a romantic symbol of the city.
This artwork, 3.80 meters high and 8 meters wide, is composed of 4,000 small ceramic tiles that, seen together, reveal the image of lips kissing. Each of these tiles contains a photograph donated by the readers of "El Periódico", answering the question "What does it mean for you to live free?". This citizen participation gives it a collective character and a special connection with the people of Barcelona.
The mural was inaugurated to commemorate the three-hundredth anniversary of the fall of Barcelona in the War of the Spanish Succession.Initially conceived as a temporary installation, its impact and popularity made Barcelona City Council decide to keep it permanently. Today, it's one of the most photographed places in Barcelona, a space where visitors capture snapshots and celebrate love. The motto "Living Free" that inspired its creation continues to resonate, inviting us to face the future with optimism.
