Casapuebl, located in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, is an iconic building by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Initially conceived in 1958 as his summer house and workshop, it was transformed over 36 years into a "habitable sculpture" that today houses a museum, an art gallery, a hotel and a cafeteria. Its architectural design, reminiscent of the houses on the Mediterranean coast of Santorini and the nests of the baker, integrates organically with the rocky landscape of Punta Ballena.
This thirteen-story complex offers terraces with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, ideal for watching the sunset. The "Ceremony of the Sun", a poetic tribute recorded by Páez Vilaró himself, takes place daily at sunset, attracting thousands of visitors.Casapuebl not only exhibits Vilaró's paintings, ceramics and sculptures in its museum, but also functions as a hotel with themed rooms and a restaurant overlooking the sea.
The building, which began with a simple wooden box called "La Pionera", grew to become a labyrinth of interconnected spaces, where the artist received personalities such as Brigitte Bardot.Casapueblos pays tribute to Carlos Miguel, son of the artist and one of the survivors of the plane crash in the Andes in 1972. Today, Casapuebl is a symbol of the fusion between art, nature and architecture, a must-see tourist destination in Uruguay. While some recent visitors have noticed that the hotel shows its age and that some facilities could be modernized, many highlight the uniqueness of the architecture, the breathtaking views and the unforgettable experience it offers.
